Rotate & Flip GIF

Turn a sideways GIF the right way up, or mirror it. Rotation is lossless and every frame keeps its timing. Need to trim it afterwards? Try Crop GIF.

How to rotate a GIF

  1. Upload the GIF

Choose or drop a GIF. Sideways phone recordings are the most common reason people land here.

  2. Pick a rotation

Rotate 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise. The preview turns as you click.

  3. Flip if needed

Mirror the GIF left to right, or flip it upside down. You can combine a flip with a rotation.

  4. Download

Every frame is turned without re-encoding the colors, so the quality is unchanged.

Fix orientation once, everywhere

A sideways GIF is more than a cosmetic problem. GIFs have no orientation tag, so whatever direction the pixels are stored in is how every browser, chat app and email client will show them.

Rotating the pixels themselves is the only permanent fix, and that's what this tool does.

Which way to turn?

  • 90° right fixes a clip whose top currently points left.
  • 90° left fixes a clip whose top currently points right.
  • 180° fixes an upside-down clip.

The preview rotates as you click, so you can simply try each one until it looks right.

When to mirror a GIF

Front-camera recordings are often mirrored, which makes text in the shot read backwards. A horizontal flip puts it right.

Mirroring also helps with layout. A GIF of someone looking or pointing toward the page edge feels more natural when it faces into the content.

Lossless by design

Rotation in right angles and flips never have to invent pixels, so we hand the GIF to gifsicle, which transforms each frame's data directly. Colors, transparency, frame timing and the loop setting all stay exactly as they were.

Because the width and height swap after a 90° turn, the output size is shown under the options before you run it.

Next steps

Rotated phone clips are usually tall and heavy. Crop to the interesting part, resize it to a sensible width, then run Compress GIF. If the clip should also play the other way, Reverse GIF is one click away.

Rotate GIF questions

Does rotating a GIF lose quality?

No. Turning by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and flipping only rearrange pixels. No pixel is blended or recolored, so the result is identical in quality to the original.

What is the difference between flip and mirror?

Mirror (horizontal flip) swaps left and right, like a reflection in a mirror. Flip vertical turns the picture upside down without changing left and right. A 180° rotation is the same as doing both.

Can I rotate a GIF by 45 degrees or another angle?

Not with this tool. Angles other than right angles need new pixels at the corners and blur the image. For a tilted look, crop the result with Crop GIF afterwards.

Why is my GIF from a phone sideways?

Phones often store video sideways with a rotation tag that video players respect. Many GIF converters ignore that tag, so the GIF comes out turned. Rotating it 90° fixes it permanently.

Does rotation change the file size?

Only slightly. The same pixels are stored in a different order, which can compress a little better or a little worse. To make it smaller, use Compress GIF.

The result is not what the preview showed.

The preview applies the flip first and then the rotation, exactly like the server. If something still looks off, try the same settings again. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!
