GIF tools that respect the format
OptimizeGIF is a free toolbox for one stubborn, much-loved image format. We build tools that do one job well, explain what they did, and get out of the way.
Why a site just for GIFs?
The GIF is almost 40 years old and still everywhere: reactions in chat, demos in documentation, stickers, emoji and email banners.
It's also easy to get wrong. GIFs have a 256-color limit per frame, per-frame timing, disposal rules and looping flags, and general-purpose image editors tend to flatten all of that. The result is files that are too big, play at the wrong speed or break when edited.
OptimizeGIF exists to handle those details properly. Every tool keeps your frames and timing intact unless you ask it to change them, and each one tells you what happened to your file.
How the tools work
Most tools run on our server using gifsicle and ImageMagick, two long-standing open-source programs trusted by developers for GIF work. We tune their settings, add safety limits and re-optimize every result so it isn't larger than it needs to be.
Some tools, like the GIF Metadata Viewer, run entirely in your browser and never upload anything.
What we stand for
Private by default
Originals are deleted right after processing and results within 12 hours. No accounts, no file history, no tracking your uploads.
Free, without catches
No watermarks, no daily limits, no "pro" upsell for basic features. Ads keep the lights on, and they stay away from your download buttons.
Honest about results
Every result shows the before and after size, dimensions and frame count. If a setting can't reach your goal, we say so and suggest what to try next.
Frames first
Timing, loops and transparency are part of a GIF, not details. Our tools preserve them unless you change them on purpose.
Works anywhere
Every tool works in a modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone, in light or dark mode. Nothing to install.
Built from feedback
New tools come from what people ask for. Tell us what you're trying to do through the contact form.
Under the hood
The open-source software and limits behind every result.
Who runs OptimizeGIF
OptimizeGIF is built and maintained by the small independent team behind ConvertICO.com, a collection of free image converters, and OptimizePNG.com. We design, write and test every tool and guide on this site ourselves.
The guides are written alongside the tools. When we explain how compression or frame timing works, it's the same knowledge the tools are built on.
