Every platform caps how large a GIF can be, and most don't say by how much you missed.

In August 2026 Discord doubled the free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB. For most reaction GIFs and short screen recordings, that's plenty.
Emoji are a different story. Every custom emoji, including animated ones, must be 256 KB or less. Discord shows emoji at tiny sizes, so resize to 128 x 128 pixels first and the limit becomes much easier to hit.
Getting a GIF under 256 KB for a Discord emoji
- Crop to a square around the subject with Crop GIF.
- Resize to 128 x 128 with Resize GIF.
- Run Compress GIF to Size with the Discord emoji preset.
Slack
Slack custom emoji have a 128 KB cap, half of Discord's. Animated emoji hit it quickly because every frame counts.
Short loops with flat colors work best. Keep the animation under about 20 frames, use a plain background, and choose the Slack emoji preset in Compress GIF to Size.
X (Twitter)
X's documentation lists a 15 MB limit for animated GIFs. It also recommends staying within 1280 x 1080 pixels, 350 frames and 300 million total pixels (width x height x frames), because GIFs over those can fail during posting even when they're under 15 MB.
A 640-pixel-wide GIF of a few seconds fits easily. If yours is larger, resize it first. Note that X converts GIFs to video for playback, so it may look slightly different once posted.
WhatsApp turns GIFs into short looping videos when you send them, and media sent the normal way is capped at 16 MB. In practice, a GIF that fits comfortably under that limit sends fastest and looks closest to the original.
If the GIF loses its loop or arrives blurry, try a smaller version: 480 pixels wide is a safe size for phones.
Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments per email. Outlook's limits vary by app and account type, from about 20 MB to 25 MB for personal accounts and more for some business accounts.
Two practical points matter more than the official limits:
- Attachments are encoded for sending, which adds roughly a third to their size. A 20 MB GIF can become a 27 MB email.
- GIFs embedded in email bodies should stay small, ideally under 1 MB, so the message opens quickly on phones.
Some older versions of Outlook for Windows show only the first frame of an animated GIF, so make sure that frame works on its own.
Web pages
There's no hard limit on your own site, but every kilobyte counts toward loading time. As a rule of thumb, keep decorative GIFs under 1 MB and hero animations under 2-3 MB.
