About GIF Compression

Everything you need to know about reducing animated GIF file sizes without ruining your animation.

How does GIF compression work?

A GIF is built from a sequence of frames. Most of those frames share large unchanging regions - sky, backgrounds, static elements - so the compressor only stores what actually changes between frames. On top of that, GIF uses a global color palette of up to 256 colors. Reducing that palette intelligently, applying dithering to disguise the loss, and dropping duplicate frames can cut your file size by 30 to 80% with no visible quality loss in most cases.

What's the difference between Light, Balanced and Maximum?

  • Light - Keeps 256 colors with minimal lossy compression. Best for photographic GIFs, detailed illustrations, and any case where you can't afford visible artifacts. Typically 20-40% smaller.
  • Balanced - 128 colors with moderate lossy compression. The sweet spot for web pages, blogs and social posts. Typically 40-60% smaller with no perceptible quality drop.
  • Maximum - 64 colors with aggressive lossy compression. For email attachments, mobile users on slow connections, or any time bytes matter more than pixels. Typically 60-80% smaller.

Should I convert to WebP or MP4 instead?

If your audience is on modern browsers, converting to WebP typically gives 40-80% smaller files than even an aggressively compressed GIF, and MP4 can be 90-95% smaller. Stick with GIF only when you need universal compatibility (e.g. older email clients, legacy chat platforms, embedded signatures).

Is my GIF safe to upload?

Yes. Files are processed on a sandboxed server and automatically deleted within a few hours. No account is required, nothing is logged, nothing is shared. Need to check what's inside your file? Use the GIF Metadata Viewer tool.
